Sono stati resi noti gironi e calendari della fase preliminare della prossima ICC T20 WORLD CUP che si svolgerà in India e Sri Lanka dal 7 febbraio all’8 marzo 2026.
L’Italia, per la prima volta ai nastri di partenza della massima competizione iridata, è stata inserita nel Girone C insieme a Bangladesh, Inghilterra, Nepal e West Indies. Gli azzurri esordiranno lunedì 9 febbraio alle ore 11.00 nel leggendario stadio di Eden Gardens a Kolkata incontrando il Bangladesh. Sarà poi la volta del Nepal che verrà affrontato al Wankhede Stadium di Mumbai giovedì 12 febbraio alle 15.00. Le ultime due partite, le più prestigiose, vedranno la Nazionale di nuovo di scena a Kolkata rispettivamente contro l’Inghilterra, martedì 16 febbraio alle 15.00, e le West Indies, venerdì 19 febbraio alle ore 11.00.
In contemporanea con la diffusione dei calendari, la Federazione Cricket Italiana ha ufficializzato la nomina di Wayne Madsen come capitano della Nazionale per il torneo. Nato a Durban il 2 gennaio 1984, Madsen è cittadino italiano attraverso la nonna paterna Marilena Allais, originaria di Avigliana in provincia di Torino. Subentra al non convocato Joe Burns che aveva capitanato la Nazionale nel torneo di qualificazione disputatosi lo scorso luglio in Olanda.
ICC T20 WORLD CUP 2026: GROUPS AND FIXTURES ANNOUNCED
The groups and preliminary-round fixtures for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka from 7 February to 8 March 2026, have been officially released.
Italy, making its debut in the world’s premier T20 competition, has been drawn into Group C alongside Bangladesh, England, Nepal, and the West Indies. The Azzurri will open their campaign on Monday, 9 February at 11:00 a.m. at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, facing Bangladesh. Their second match will be against Nepal at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, 12 February at 3:00 p.m. The final two and most prestigious fixtures will see the National Team return to Kolkata to take on England on Tuesday, 16 February at 3:00 p.m., followed by the West Indies on Friday, 19 February at 11:00 a.m.
Coinciding with the publication of the fixtures, the Italian Cricket Federation has confirmed the appointment of Wayne Madsen as National Team captain for the tournament. Born in Durban on 2 January 1984, Madsen holds Italian citizenship through his paternal grandmother, Marilena Allais, originally from Avigliana in the province of Turin. He replaces Joe Burns,who was not selected for the World Cup squad, after having captained Italy in the qualifying tournament held last July in the Netherlands.
